Practical checklist
Prepare for a child-development appointment without preparing a self-diagnosis.
A short timeline, useful records, and a few focused questions can help you leave with a clearer plan.
01
Before you go
Bring only what is useful and relevant.
- A short timeline of what you noticed and when it began.
- Examples from home, school, play, or other regular settings.
- Relevant previous assessments, prescriptions, hearing or vision reports, if they exist.
- A list of medicines or important health history when relevant.
- Feedback from a teacher or regular caregiver if it helps describe the pattern.
02
Questions to ask
Try to leave with a plan, not just a label.
- What are the main possibilities you are considering?
- What information is still missing?
- Is a validated screening or fuller assessment appropriate?
- Should hearing, vision, communication, movement, learning, or behaviour be assessed?
- What can we safely support or observe at home?
- When should we follow up, and with whom?
03
Before you leave
Repeat the next step in your own words.
- What happens next?
- Who is responsible for arranging it?
- How soon should it happen?
- What change would mean we should seek help sooner?
04
Privacy
Share records carefully.
Send sensitive child records only through a channel you have confirmed belongs to the professional or institution involved in the child's care. Avoid sending reports to unofficial social-media inboxes.
